We’ve Reached 25% Of Our Target!

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, the current amount raised now stands at £2,540.35 for Leukaemia And Lymphoma Research, 25% of our £10,000 pounds target!

Screenshot of our current total.

Huge thanks to everyone who has had a part in reaching this milestone, especially those who donated, or helped in one of our fundraising events.

If you’ve been putting it off or waiting until it was closer to the swim, now is the time to start donating! With the swim only a week away, it would be great if we got to Dover already knowing we’ve got closer to our target.

You can also help spread the word by retweeting the tweet below, or by sharing the http://justgiving.com/teambrophy link on Facebook.

Thanks again everyone for the support, it’s a fantastic feeling to know all the training and hard work is making a difference to LLR, and hope to be writing another one of these soon when we get to 50%!

Fundraising with tea and scones

On August 4th, my family ran a fundraising event to support Brophy’s chosen charity, in the form of tea and scones out on the lawn! There was also a bring-and-buy sale with everything from books to home-grown veg (thanks to all who donated something!).

Despite the weather forecast showing rain for the afternoon, the sun managed to stay out to see us raise over £235 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research!

Thanks to my Mum, Dad and Beth for running the event, and Julie for helping out. And also thanks to all who donated, including the people who couldn’t make it to the event and donated online!

Less than a month to go!

That’s right my English Channel solo attempt is less than a month away! I am the 3rd swimmer to go between the 27th of August and 3rd of September.

I will be based in Dover for the week and won’t know which date I’m swimming until the night before due to weather conditions. The questions I keep being asked tend to be:

  • Am I nervous?
  • How long will it take?
  • How can I follow it on the day?
  • Do you feel ready?
  • Will you be disappointed if you don’t reach French shores?

And here are the answers to these questions!

Qualifying for the English Channel!

Welcome back to another blog, it’s been a busy month but the blogs are coming to get you up to speed. First of all I think I should start with what it took to qualify for the official English Channel challenge!

You may not be aware but in order for me to swim the English Channel officially I have to first qualify under set conditions beforehand. Earlier last month I set out on a very, very cold Saturday with temperatures of just 12c in official clothing that consists of a pair of speedos, hat and goggles.

The aim was to swim in open water for 6 hours non-stop including feeds, this was going into the unknown for me and I was quite nervous about how cold it had become. Nevertheless I knew that I needed this swim and I was determined to last the 6 hours.

Every hour I would stop and “tread water” (which is simply swimming still and upright for a feed) where I would then look to take on a lot of water and some food to keep me going. I have heard a lot of talk by other swimmers past and present swear by the use of jelly babies! It sounds quite strange at first but actually works quite well in terms of ease to eat and sugar etc.
